How do we get board approval for a mobile market?

Short answer: Boards approve plans that fit the mission, show real need and carry a funded budget for more than one year. Bring the need, the partners, a three year budget, the risks and how you will measure success. Plan around the board calendar.

Board approval is often the slowest step in a launch. Most boards meet monthly or quarterly. Some send new programs to a committee first. Find out the calendar early and work back from it.

What the board will ask

  1. Does it fit our mission? Tie the market to goals the board already holds, like health, food access or economic development.

  2. Is the need real? Show the low access areas you will serve and what residents told you. Is a mobile market right for our community?

  3. Who is with us? Name the host sites, health partners and funders who have said yes.

  4. What does it cost, and for how long? Show startup and operating costs for three years, and where the money comes from. What it costs to start and run.

  5. What could go wrong? Cover insurance, staffing, breakdowns and what happens if a grant ends.

  6. How will we know it works? Pick a few measures you will report every quarter. How to measure impact.

Make the yes easier

  • Find a board champion before the meeting. Walk them through the plan first.

  • Ask for a phased approval: a pilot season with a clear check-in date.

  • Bring a letter of support from a host site or health partner.

  • Show the timeline, so the board sees when it needs to decide.

If the board says not yet

Ask what would change the answer. It is usually funding or a partner. Come back with that piece in place.
